Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice
Government Funded Route
The government funded Conveyancing Technician Apprenticeship allows you to gain your Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice without the private costs and within the same timeframe as the private route.
Private Route
The private Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice is funded by yourself, usually costing around £2,300-£4,000 depending on the training provider your choose.
Finding The Best Route For You
There are two ways to train for the Level 4 Conveyancing qualification: the government-funded apprenticeship route, or the private route where you pay for the course yourself. Both lead to the same qualification, but they suit different situations depending on whether you have an employer behind you and how you want to fund your training. Here is how the two compare.
The apprenticeship route, where the cost of training is covered by the apprenticeship levy, so eligible employers pay no course fees and the apprentice earns a salary while they qualify. How it compares:
Unlike the private route, you train on the job in a law firm and study alongside real conveyancing work, rather than funding the course yourself and studying separately.
Ideal if you want to:
- Earn a salary while you train towards the qualification
- Have your training funded through the apprenticeship levy
- Gain hands-on experience in a firm from the start
- Qualify without taking on course fees yourself
The self-funded route, where you pay for the Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice directly and study without an employer or an apprenticeship contract.
How it compares:
Unlike the apprenticeship route, you fund the course yourself and study at your own pace, which gives you more flexibility but means the fees come out of your own pocket.
Ideal if you want to:
- Study without needing an employer to take you on
- Work through the diploma at your own pace
- Train while in a role that will not support an apprenticeship
- Keep full control over how and when you study

What You Need to Know About The Conveyancing Technician Apprenticeship
The Level 4 Conveyancing Technician Apprenticeship trains people for a career in property law while they earn. It is aligned with the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) and gives apprentices a clear route to qualification, covering both residential and commercial property transactions along with the legal procedures and standards the work involves.
The programme includes the Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice, with modules such as contract drafting and title investigation. Apprentices complete five units through written assessments and exams, and apply what they study in a real legal setting throughout. The apprenticeship runs for 21 months: 18 months of training followed by a 3-month endpoint assessment.
Private Route to Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice
The Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law and Practice is the qualification that sits inside the apprenticeship, and it gives aspiring conveyancers the technical grounding the job needs.
Across its five units, apprentices cover the work they will handle every day: contract drafting, title investigation, and the legal steps that take a residential or commercial sale through to completion. Because they study while working in a firm, they apply each topic to live cases as they learn it. By the time they finish, they hold a recognised qualification and have real files behind them, so they can take on conveyancing work in their own right rather than starting from scratch.
