How Practical Experience Prepares You for the Role of a Solicitor

role of a solicitor

When it comes to preparing for the role of a solicitor, there’s no substitute for real-world legal experience. While traditional academic routes focus heavily on theory, solicitor apprenticeships offer something different; a dynamic blend of study and practical work that helps aspiring solicitors build confidence, develop essential skills, and hit the ground running in their careers.

Datalaw’s Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship is one example of this in action, offering apprentices like Rio Kellman the chance to learn the theoretical side in her online workshops and then apply it in the workplace immediately after. In a recent video testimonial, Rio shared how this dual approach has shaped her development and accelerated her journey into the legal profession.

Applying Theory in Real Time

As Rio explains, the biggest benefit of her apprenticeship has been the ability to immediately apply what she’s learning in her academic workshops to her work at the law firm.

“The most important thing, ultimately, is the hands-on experience, but embedded with the theoretical knowledge,” she says.
“I’m learning all different things, and then I’m actually applying them to my everyday work.”

This seamless integration of theory and practice doesn’t just reinforce learning — it makes it stick. Instead of preparing for a distant future as a solicitor, Rio is already acting in the role, managing client interactions, understanding procedures, and experiencing how legal strategy plays out in practice.

Bridging the Gap Between Study and Practice

One of the common challenges law graduates face is bridging the gap between what they’ve studied and what the legal profession actually requires. Apprenticeships address that problem head-on.

Rio puts it simply:

“A lot of people who do qualifications through other systems know all the theoretical knowledge but wouldn’t know how to apply it in a real-world setting.”

In contrast, solicitor apprentices are immersed in legal practice from day one. They’re part of the team, working on live cases, drafting legal documents, and communicating with clients, all while preparing for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE).

Building the Right Skills for the Role of a Solicitor

The role of a solicitor isn’t just about knowing the law, it’s about applying it with precision, confidence, and professionalism. That’s why hands-on learning is so valuable.

Rio highlights how her experience on the apprenticeship has helped her build core skills that go far beyond textbooks:

  • Client interaction: Learning how to communicate clearly and sensitively with people at different stages of a legal matter.
  • Legal research and writing: Developing the ability to produce practical, usable legal documents based on complex information.
  • Time management and multitasking: Balancing real client deadlines with study requirements.
  • Strategic thinking: Understanding how theory translates into real-life legal decisions.

“You’ll be learning on the job while you’re studying,” she explains. “So it’s crucial to be able to balance both aspects.”

This kind of environment develops both technical and soft skills, preparing apprentices not just to pass the SQE, but to thrive in the profession.

Reinforcing Knowledge Through Practice

The benefit of practical exposure is especially clear when Rio describes how it helped her understand the differences between legal theory and real-life application.

“A bail application in real life would probably start as just an email. But in the textbook, it starts with you drafting an application and discussing it with the court,” she says.

Seeing that contrast first-hand allowed her to internalise the process more clearly. It also helped her understand how to adapt depending on context, an essential skill for any solicitor.

“Being able to see the theoretical application and then the practical application in real life, and applying them together — that’s been really beneficial for me.”

Confidence Through Context

With each real-world scenario she tackles, Rio gains more confidence in her ability to work as a solicitor. She’s no longer waiting until after qualification to experience the profession, she’s already embedded in it.

““Doing those questions and doing that learning… made me feel really confident about how I’m doing at my job”,” she shares.

By working within a legal team and being trusted with responsibility, she’s developed a deeper understanding of what solicitors actually do, and how to do it well.

A Smarter Route to Qualification

As Rio puts it, solicitor apprenticeships also offer financial and professional stability that traditional legal education paths often lack.

“It’s a way that you can become a solicitor while earning,” she says. “That’s so good for stability and career progression. And it means you can do it at any age.”

The combination of structured learning, hands-on training, and income makes the apprenticeship route both sustainable and accessible, especially for those who can’t afford to take time away from work or family commitments to study full-time.

Learn the Role by Living It

The solicitor apprenticeship doesn’t just prepare you for the role of a solicitor, it puts you in it. Apprentices like Rio don’t have to imagine what it’s like to work in law. They’re living it every day.

“I’ve been doing this job for a year now,” she says. “And because of the apprenticeship, I’ve got a much more in-depth knowledge now.”
