CILEx Appenticeship Overview
The CILEx apprenticeship is the most efficient route for learners to gain practice rights in their chosen legal specialism. It is a degree-equivalent qualification that combines academic rigour with hands-on legal practice. Unlike a traditional degree, it is designed specifically for professional practice, enabling learners to qualify and practise in their chosen legal specialism on completion.
This is a government funded pathway, with up to £27,000 of training funding available. Co-funded employers pay no more than £1,350; levy-paying employers use their levy funds.

Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for Datalaw’s CILEx Apprenticeship via the Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship requires meeting some eligibility points that we must check before moving forward in the application process.
Note: Pathways differentiate based on legal experience bands: 0–2 years, 2–5 years, 5+ years.
- You must be employed by a UK organisation and be within a legal team.
- You must spend at least 50% of your working time in England.
- You must NOT be currently enrolled on another government funded programme.
- Must hold one of the following qualification levels: Level 3 Law; 2:2 Law, 2:1 Law, or Non-Law Degree: or PGDL/GDL

The CILEx apprenticeship includes 29 months training and there is up to 4 months available to take final assessment.
The Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice provides a cost-effective route to developing qualified legal professionals, backed by UK government apprenticeship funding. Levy-paying employers can fund the full programme cost (up to £27,000) through their existing apprenticeship levy contributions.
For non-levy employers, the government covers 95% of the training fees, leaving the firm responsible for just a 5% contribution.
